Here is one of my family's most favorite recipes when the weather is cold - healthy Turkey Chili. Don't like packaged seasoning like my husband Jim? Then make your own:
Jim adds his own seasonings without
measuring, and often adds some fresh tomatoes to this soup recipe for extra zest. Part of the key is
using good quality ingredients. If you are using canned tomatoes, it
is best to use a brand that has the white lining on the inside of the
can. Also, if using canned tomatoes - and they taste acidic, add some vinegar. Jim
has lots of little tips like that - he worked in food and beverage
industry for about 15 years and simply has developed the art of
cooking!
Essentially, this recipe is a very basic one. I make it all
the time and it always comes out really well. Enjoy!
- 1 Pd ground turkey
- 2 T Olive oil
- ½ C chopped celery
- 1 C green pepper
- 1 C chopped onion
- 1 C chopped mushroom
- ½ C chopped parsley
- 1 pkg of chili seasoning ( I use my own spices and not packaged mix. See notes below.)
- 14.5 oz diced tomatoes with juice
- 14.5 oz tomato sauce
- 8 oz tomato paste

Brown turkey in oil. Add celery, peppers, onions, mushrooms, parsley, and seasonings. Mix well! Add diced tomatoes, sauce and paste. If you like your chili spicy add ½ - 1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes. Cook all for at least 1 hour, the longer the better!
